I am running the Chicago Marathon on October 8th, to raise money for Great Lakes Adaptive Sports Association --- GLASA!
GLASA provides programming to individuals with physical and visual disabilities.
They provide equipment and opportunities to persons of all ages with impairments, often giving them the first introductions to sports and activities that they can excel at!
We all have our own difficulties in life that we work diligently to overcome...this organization
achieves the ability to overcome!
WHY I SUPPORT GLASA:
My first time volunteering for GLASA was during a sectional meeting that qualified athletes for the Para-Olympics trials. I witnessed inspiration at its finest in meeting these athletes who define what it is to be above and beyond!
One story of perseverance involved a young man losing a lower leg from an accident and the pain he suffered in losing his ability to be part of sports and life.
In a desperate out reach for life, he drove himself from Chicago to an out of State impaired athlete field event. At this event, he was competing in the long jump, where his prosthetic kept falling off during the jump event. Time and time again he attempted to jump not realizing Cindy the founder of GLASA was watching. She found out he was from Chicago, saw that he had the wrong prosthetic and approached him about becoming part to team GLASA! He did, they fitted him with prosthetics from the money that is donated to GLASA and the last I heard he is on his way to the next Special Olympics to represent team USA!
This is just one of many stories that come from GLASA, which started with one woman helping out a few impaired person from her neighborhood to now a team of a few hundred. I am so inspired and hope you will be too!!!
